How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is the sweet spot. That is deep enough to hold moisture and block weeds, but not so deep that it smothers roots or holds water against the plant stems. We keep it pulled back off the trunks of trees and shrubs.
When is the best time to mulch in South Carolina?
Early spring, March into April. Mulching before summer locks moisture into the soil ahead of the heat and keeps the beds looking clean all season. A light fall refresh is optional and mostly cosmetic.
How often do I need new mulch?
